What's more, the fact that Zend completely ignores these problems is a REAL problem seeing as I have paid several hundred $ for the product.

It's kinda like the old days when you sat and waited for an internet page to load over a 28.8 modem. First and foremost the poor overall performance of the product is unlike anything I have seen in modern computing. Zend Studio is very disappointing in many respects. I have seen a lot of posts complaining about slowness and incompatabilities, and I too have even complained. I have been using Zend Studio since the 3.5 days and although it has not always been perfect, I am going to have to say it is still the best solution for PHP development. If there's a serious bug, chip up the cash to get the next minor release (which are rare) or the next major release. Keep in mind that it's a commercial app and you don't get even minor version updates without a support contract. It's pretty good, but there's a lot of room for improvement. Because of that, I've taken to using vim more than ZS. It blocks the whole UI and is extremely irritating.

This sucks big time because it almost always comes while writing code - like it decides to rebuild the code completion database in the middle of working. It'll freeze up and you can't do anything for a minute while it does whatever it thinks needs doing. Yes, it's a java app and it's reasonably fast, but it always has choke points. The UI sucks in general because you can't hide unused toolbars. The same goes for ftp servers - they're all defined globally - that should be defined within the scope of the project. You mention that you have to define a global setting for the php version - that should be defined by the current project you have open or by the project the current file belongs to. a lot of powerful (if rarely used ) stuff. slow to load, slow to use : this is probably the biggest problem in daily use. It adds the FTP sites into your system namespaces. no tag editor : well, it does have a code completion system, so it can be done,Д«ut it is not as good as Dreamweaver, for example. I added a breakpoint in the code where the dispatcher kicks in to see what happened.This is one of the better editors out there - but still not perfect yet. Since I use ZFвЂ™s MVC components I also use the front dispatcher that matches the current request to all the routes to see which module/controller/action it is supposed to execute. When inspecting the $route variable I saw that the :id part of route had already been set. I stepped on until that line had been executed. At some point in that method it fetches the route using the getRoute method of the router instance: I kept on stepping until I reached the url method of the url helper. When the debugger stops at the break point I вЂњstepped insideвЂќ to see what was going on. The interesting part is what happens inside the url helper class. The line with the break point itself is not too interesting. Since we only want to see what happens at the break point I just hit run. When starting the debugger it stops at the first line asking you what to do next. To set a break point in Zend Studio you just have to click on the line you want to break point to be set. At first I thought the bug was in the url helper so I added a break point at the line where I output the route and started the debugger. I use Zend Studio these days and downloaded and installed the standalone Zend Debugger so I could do some debugging of ZF. What gives?! Since I like my things to be logical I had to find out what was going on here. It was pure luck that I noticed it, but the weird part is that the :id in the route was set to the correct value even if I didnвЂ™t specify it. ItвЂ™s initially set to null, so if I somehow forget to set it using the Zend_ViewвЂ™s url helper, Zend Framework will promptly tell me to do stuff the right way! As you can see above I actually forgot to set the id when using the url helper (itвЂ™s supposed to be set in the first argument to the helper, but I specified an empty array).
